Part 2 of 3

Measure a density

calculate

Try it yourself

calculate: work out the answer from the data.

A metal block measures 5.0 cm by 4.0 cm by 2.0 cm and has a mass of 108 g. Calculate (a) its volume and (b) its density, to 2 significant figures.

Give each answer with its unit

Type numbers like 0.25 or 2.5x10^-3. Put the unit in its own box, for example g, cm3 or m/s. Leave the unit box empty if the quantity has no unit.

(a) Volume of the block
(b) Density of the metal

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 · 2026–2028 v2 · Original learning materials.

Mass and weight, gravitational field strength g = W / m and comparing masses on a balance (1.3.1–1.3.5), density ρ = m / V, measuring the density of a liquid, a regular solid and an irregular solid that sinks, and predicting from density data whether an object floats or one liquid floats on another (1.4.1–1.4.4). Forces and their effects are in FORCE01; pressure in liquids is in PRES01.

Apparatus, amounts and times in the experiment are illustrative. Real practical work follows a teacher-approved safety method.
