What can you recall?
state / calculate
Recall and explain
state: give a concise answer. calculate: work out the answer from the data.
Keep the lesson closed. (a) State what is meant by speed and by velocity. (b) A runner covers 400 m in 80 s. Calculate her speed. (c) On a distance–time graph, a straight line rises from 100 m at 10 s to 250 m at 40 s. Calculate the speed. (d) A car travels 3.0 km in 4.0 minutes, then waits 1.0 minute. Calculate its average speed in m/s. (e) On a distance–time graph, what does each of these show: a flat line; a straight falling line; a curve that gets steeper? (f) On paper, sketch the distance–time graph of a girl who stands 5 m from a wall for 10 s, then walks away from it at a steady 1.5 m/s for 20 s, then stands still for 10 s.

Speed as distance travelled per unit time, v = s/t (1.2.1); velocity as speed in a given direction (1.2.2); average speed = total distance ÷ total time (1.2.3); sketching, plotting and interpreting distance–time and speed–time graphs (1.2.4); at rest, constant speed, speeding up and slowing down from a graph or from data (1.2.5); speed from the gradient of a straight section of a distance–time graph (1.2.6); distance travelled from the area under a speed–time graph for constant speed or constant acceleration (1.2.7). Acceleration as a number, free fall and drag (1.2.8–1.2.13) are in MOT02.
Apparatus, amounts and times in the experiment are illustrative. Real practical work follows a teacher-approved safety method.
